My dear friend Kate Maruyama is curating a column THE HORROR for Cultural Daily and my review of the movie Karen is now live.
I didn’t love this film, as you’ll see when you read my review. I do credit the filmmakers for tackling the cultural phenomenon known as Karen and attempting to articulate the true horror of entitled white women policing black bodies. Karen lacks creepiness and gravitas. I never felt truly frightened by the movie’s depiction of a racist woman constantly monitoring her black neighbors. Trust, I’ve encountered some real-life Karens who were much more horrifying.
